Widow of late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wougon has won the seat in the by-elections.

Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan polled 12,030 representing 68.8 percent of the total votes cast.

Political parties vying for the vacant seat are the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC), Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).

But the NDC polled out of the elections citing security reasons following a shooting incident at La Bawaleshie Presby School Park Thursday morning.

However, their candidate, Delali Kwasi Been long polled 5,299 votes representing 30.37%.

The PPP’s William Kofi Doworkpor and LPG’s Clement Boadi polled 102 and 17 votes respectively.

Madam Alhassan noted that she will focus on security, sanitation, scholarship scheme, women and children empowerment and youth entrepreneurship.

She pledged to continue the projects began by her late husband if elected.

The seat became vacant following the demise of her husband, Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko.

  1. This is a shame to we as a nation. Now because of power, we don’t respect traditional any more. Lydia Alhassan I a disgrace to woman wood. I wonder if she belongs to a family also I doubt if the family has a tradition. How can you stand to inherit your husband whiles we know that as a widow, it’s mandatory for you to mourn your late husband for a year.
