The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has assured drivers and traders at the railway station near the Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) that no developer will take over the land.
Speaking during a visit to the area on Wednesday after a protest, Mr. Allotey categorically denied selling any portion of the land to private developers.
He stressed that President John Mahama was committed to protecting the interests of transport operators and traders.
“As the Mayor of Accra, I have not sold any land to anybody. If anyone claims the land has been sold to him or her, they should bring the documentation,” he said, assuring the traders that “no one will take over your lorry station, not today or tomorrow.”
The Mayor revealed that President Mahama had directed him to convey the assurance that the land was for the government and urged the said private developer to reclaim his money from whoever purportedly sold the land, emphasising that “no construction will be allowed here.”
He called on drivers and traders to engage the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) or the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) whenever such issues arise.
“I am the government’s representative in Accra. Bring your concerns to me first before taking any action,” he stressed.
A representative of the drivers apologised for not consulting the Mayor or the AMA before embarking on the protest and acknowledged that the Mayor had no hand in any sale of land.
He clarified that their intention was to seek the government’s intervention and not to cast the AMA in a bad light.
