The Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested the father of a three-year-old girl who was severely abused by her stepmother in Winneba, Central Region.
According to police reports, the stepmother, identified only as Akaima, a Liberian national, allegedly poured boiling water on the child’s private parts as punishment for bedwetting.
The assault left the little girl in critical condition.
Medical staff at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, where the child is receiving treatment, say she will require extensive reconstructive procedures to restore her reproductive system due to the extent of the burns.
The incident occurred while the victim was spending the holidays with her father.
The case has drawn widespread public outrage.
The Mother and Child Rescue Unit of Challenging Heights, a child protection NGO, has pledged to cover the girl’s medical expenses and is calling for a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, DOVVSU at the Winneba Divisional Police Command says investigations are ongoing and efforts are being made to apprehend the stepmother, who is currently on the run.
The unit also noted that domestic violence cases in the municipality remain a serious concern and pledged to intensify public education campaigns to prevent such incidents.
