Ghana’s Black Queens will kick off their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign today with a challenging Group C opener against defending champions South Africa at the Honneur Stadium in Morocco.
This marks Ghana’s return to the continental stage for the first time since 2018, and they face a stern test in the high-flying Banyana Banyana.
In preparation for the tournament, the Queens played three international friendlies—securing a 3-1 win over Malawi before suffering back-to-back defeats to Benin (4-2) and Nigeria (3-1).
While the team’s attacking potential showed promise, defensive lapses remain a concern ahead of their tournament opener.
Despite the mixed results in the build-up, head coach Kim Lars Björkegren remains optimistic about his side’s chances.
“We know we’re considered underdogs or a dark horse in this tournament. Maybe not among the top favourites, but I truly believe this group has the quality to beat any team here,” Björkegren stated. “I think we have a real chance to achieve something special.”
Kickoff for the clash against South Africa is scheduled for 16:00 GMT.
