Today is World Sleep Day – a day in which we highlight all sorts of important issues regarding sleep.
For example, we have looked into what time you need to go to bed in order to wake up refreshed.
But here we take a look at what your sleeping position says about you? Do you stretch out, cocoon yourself completely in your duvet or lay flat on your back with your arms out stretched?
Whichever sleeping position you find yourself in, studies have shown that these positions can reveal a lot about what’s going on in your mind and why you have self consciously chosen these particular positions.
They can also display your personality and what you find most comfort in.
Here behaviour expert Adrianne Carter reveals the best position to sleep in is on your back and also on your side, these help support your spine whilst sleeping.
Living on the edge
With an arm or leg hanging off the side of the bed with the body creeping almost to the point of falling off, these are the sleepers that are really sleeping on the edge.
These sleepers appear ready for action, ready to get up and go.
It also shows a sign that they may not want to cuddle or get too close, displaying independent people.
Probably seen as one of the comfiest positions but it’s not for everyone.
Snuggled and curled up completely in their duvet, cocooning themselves in what seems to be a ‘safe place’.
People who suffer from anxiety tend to sleep in this position, it gives a sense of protection and comfort allowing their minds and body to feel safe.
The Star Fish
If they’re sleeping next to a significant other this may not be the best position but it shows confidence but can also mean your partner takes a secondary role.
This can be seen as being the alpha in the relationship, stretching out, taking all the available space for your comfort in a care free manner.
Ironically this position can also suggest that they don’t typically like to be centre of attention.
On your front
These people tend to be busy in everyday life, throwing themselves at any challenge and taking risks.
They’re usually big social butterflies too with a social calendar full of events but aren’t always as confident as you may think.
On your back
Led on your back with your arms out stretched above your head suggests you’re in a deep sleep.
This position shows someone who is confident and comfortable in their own company but also shows a venerable position.
They’re easy going people, with a positive outlook in life.
Studies have shown this is one of the most common sleeping positions, giving a sense of safety and security.
Curled up on their side with either one arm holding the pillow or arms tucked near their chest.
In general these can be the more sensitive people but can give across a tough exterior.
This position gives you comfort and closeness, in as much contact as possible.
Sleeping with your body next to your partner’s with arms wrapped around, it also gives reassurance of affection.
If a cuddlier sleeps alone they tend to hold a pillow instead, it gives peace and relaxation.
These people like to feel safe and protected and are often big day dreamers too.
Positions can say a lot about an individual but the most important thing is to have a good nights sleep so make sure you’re completely comfortable in whatever position you find yourself in.
Wiggle yourself around a bit if it takes you a while to find the position that works for you, don’t force yourself in a position that doesn’t feel right.
Relax, let go of the day and have yourself a good and comfortable nights sleep.
