Two people have been confirmed dead, with five others injured, following a fatal road crash at Third Ridge Junction on the Accra–Cape Coast Highway in Cape Coast.

The accident, which occurred on Tuesday, involved a Toyota Corolla with registration number GW-5769-16 and a HOWO tipper truck with registration number GN-1497-22.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service at the Cape Coast Regional Headquarters responded to the distress call and carried out rescue operations at the scene.

According to the Central Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Merinda Mary Atsigah-Mensah, the driver of the Toyota Corolla was trapped behind the steering wheel and had to be extricated by firefighters.

She explained that he was rescued from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Preliminary accounts indicate that the Corolla was travelling from Cape Coast towards Accra when the driver slowed down after spotting a pick-up vehicle overtaking dangerously.

The HOWO tipper truck, which was approaching from the opposite direction, reportedly veered off its lane to avoid a collision with the overtaking vehicle. However, while attempting to return to its lane, the driver lost control and crashed into the Corolla.

All casualties were transported to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for treatment and further management.

ACFO1 Atsigah-Mensah cautioned drivers to exercise discipline and adhere to road safety regulations, noting that reckless driving remains a major cause of avoidable road accidents in the region.
