The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has confirmed that Ghana will host the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking a major boost for the country’s football ambitions.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Tuesday, the Buem MP disclosed that Ghana secured the hosting rights without any financial outlay, attributing the success to the country’s credibility and leadership.
“We have won the bid to host the U-20 AFCON tournament next year, and we did not spend a penny. We leverage on the credibility of the President, John Mahama and the entire country,” the Buem MP said.
Kofi Adams further explained that the decision aligns with national plans to mark Ghana’s 70th anniversary next year, describing the tournament as a strategic opportunity to highlight the milestone while promoting sports development.
“The reason is that next year, the government turns 70 years old, and we want to use that and leverage it as a country.”
He expressed optimism that hosting the continental youth championship would help position Ghana as a leading centre for football talent development across Africa.
“Our aim is that, going forward, Ghana will become the hub of talent, and we know we will be able to do that,” he added.
The hosting of the tournament is expected to significantly boost football development, improve infrastructure, and stimulate local economic activity.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is set to work closely with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and a yet-to-be-formed Local Organising Committee (LOC) to oversee planning and delivery of the event.
Key focus areas will include infrastructure readiness, logistics, security, and fan experience, all aimed at ensuring a world-class tournament.
Beyond the sporting excitement, the decision is being viewed as an endorsement of Ghana’s growing reputation as one of Africa’s key football destinations.
