Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has disclosed that new Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has been given an ambitious mandate to lead Ghana to the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 73-year-old Portuguese tactician, who signed a four-month contract to replace Otto Addo, was officially unveiled in Accra last week as Ghana’s new head coach.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr Adams said the directive to Queiroz goes beyond mere participation, with expectations of surpassing Ghana’s 2010 World Cup quarterfinal feat or even going further.

“We have given the coach a good target to do better in the World Cup than we did in 2010. It was the same target given to Otto Addo,” the Buem MP said.

“The team should be ranked among the top five in Africa, and we should win the AFCON, which we did not qualify for. At the moment, we are not even among the best in Africa.

“We want to do better in the World Cup, and that is by getting into the semifinals of the World Cup. Even better, we want to win the World Cup, and that is the ultimate aim,” Mr Adams added.

He stressed that the broader objective is to restore Ghana’s status among Africa’s elite while making a strong impact on the world stage.

Ghana, making their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
