Promise Yayra Asamani was granted GH¢100,000 bail with two sureties and is to reappear on April 24, 2026.

She pleaded not guilty to a charge of publication of false news with intent to cause fear and alarm to the public.

Asamani was arrested by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team for allegedly publishing false information on Snapchat.

A police brief said on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Selasie Kwaku Anthonio, a 43-year-old Uber driver, reported to the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team over a viral Snapchat post.

The post, which featured his photograph and vehicle registration number, AD-1479-25, falsely labelled him a “murderer and a thief.”

“It further alleged that he used signal jammers to disconnect passengers’ network connectivity and also carried offensive weapons,” the brief said.

The complainant said he became aware of the post on March 10, 2026, at about 1457 hours, after being alerted by his nephew, Godsway Tetteh.

Following the viral spread, he received numerous distressing calls from family and customers. Uber subsequently blocked his account, depriving him of his livelihood.

He also expressed fear for his life due to the risk of public hostility.

Investigations led to the arrest of Stephanie Asamani, a sister of the accused, on Friday, March 13, at her residence at Cambodia, Spintex, Accra.

During interrogation, Stephanie said on March 9, 2026, at about 1400 hours, she booked a ride from Spintex to Oyibi, with the complainant as the driver.

She alleged that shortly after the trip began, the driver asked her to change the drop-off location to a nearby point so he could go “off-trip.”

Stephanie further claimed that during the journey, the driver made a phone call in Ewe, saying: “I am bringing the goods to the location, so wait.”

She also alleged that she saw a rag and a hammer in the boot area of the vehicle, and that the driver later stopped at the Toyota Motors Roundabout, leading to a verbal altercation, after which she exited the car.

Upon returning home, she narrated the incident to her sisters and sent the accused a screenshot of the driver’s profile.

On March 11, 2026, Stephanie discovered that the story had been posted on Snapchat. When confronted, Asamani said she shared the information “to create awareness.”

Further investigations confirmed that Asamani authored the post, which explicitly labelled the driver a “killer.”

The brief said the accused failed to honour a police invitation extended to her on March 12, and was subsequently arrested on Saturday, March 14.

During interrogation, she admitted that the post was based solely on her sister’s account and that she had no evidence to substantiate the allegations.

She had earlier been granted police enquiry bail on March 16, 2026.

The Police cautioned the public against the publication of false news, stressing that such acts were offences under the laws of the country.

Woman arrested over viral social media post accusing Uber driver of being a ‘murderer’ https://www.adomonline.com/woman-arrested-over-viral-social-media-post-accusing-uber-driver-of-being-a-murderer/ Tue, 17 Mar 2026 07:33:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2641240 The Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team of the Ghana Police Service has arrested a 20-year-old woman, Promise Yayra Asamani, for allegedly sharing false information about an Uber driver on social media.

Her arrest followed her failure to respond to a police invitation to assist with ongoing investigations.

According to a police report, the case began on March 11, 2026, when 43-year-old Uber driver Selasie Kwaku Anthonio filed a complaint after a Snapchat post about him went viral. The post, which included his photograph and vehicle registration number AD-1479-26, described him as a “murderer and a thief” and alleged that he used signal jammers to block passengers’ network connectivity while carrying offensive weapons.

The complainant told investigators that he became aware of the post on March 10 around 2:57 p.m., after his nephew, Godsway Tetteh, drew his attention to it. The situation quickly escalated as the post circulated widely online.

“Following the viral spread, the complainant received numerous distressing calls from family and customers. Subsequently, Uber blocked his account, depriving him of his livelihood. He also expressed significant fear for his life due to the risk of public hostility,” the report stated.

Police investigations first led to the arrest of the suspect’s sister, Stephanie Asamani, on March 13 at her residence in Cambodia, Spintex, Accra. During questioning, she recounted an encounter with the driver on March 9 after booking a ride from Spintex to Oyibi.

“Shortly after starting, the driver requested her to change the drop-off location to a nearby destination so he could go ‘off-trip,’” the report added.

Stephanie also claimed she noticed a rag and a hammer in the boot of the car and alleged that the driver later stopped abruptly at the Toyota Motors Roundabout, leading to a disagreement that caused her to end the trip midway.

She later shared her experience with her sisters and sent a screenshot of the driver’s profile to Promise Yayra Asamani.

“When she got home, Stephanie narrated the incident to her sisters and sent a screenshot of the driver’s profile to her younger sister, Promise Yayra Asamani. On March 11, 2026, Stephanie discovered the story had been posted on Snapchat. When confronted, Promise claimed she published the details ‘to create awareness.’ Further investigations confirmed that Promise authored the post, which explicitly labelled the driver a ‘killer’,” the report said.

Police say Promise ignored an invitation issued on March 12, prompting her arrest on March 14. During interrogation, she reportedly admitted that the claims she shared were based solely on her sister’s account and that she had no evidence to support the allegations.

She has since been granted police enquiry bail on March 16, 2026, while investigations continue.

The police have cautioned the public against spreading unverified information on social media, warning that such actions are unlawful and can have serious consequences.

A Ghanaian driver who has won the hearts of many social media users after he returned phones, Nigerian actress, Anita Joseph left in his car has finally found his voice days after the incident.

Frederick Fiifi Aikins, an Uber driver said he has been in the business for the past three years to complement his painting job.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Monday, Frederick recounted on that fateful day, April 3, 2024, he had gone to pick up his car from the workshop and was on a test drive.

“I had a problem with the engine and after I went to pick it up from the shop, I decided to work for a while just so I could make money to feed because I had nothing on me.

“I picked two passengers and Anita was the third I picked from Danquah Circle opposite Koala to Labadi Beach Hotel,” he narrated.

Frederick said he was having a bad day, hence he couldn’t even recognise Miss Joseph.

“As usual of me, I asked how she was doing and focused on my driving because I was just concerned about how to get to the destination and earn money to buy fuel,” Fiifi added.

The driver admitted he could have sold the phones to cater for his needs and settle some debts he owes, but had a re-think due to his upbringing.

“My Christian teachings and values frown on that and as a Sunday school teacher of Christ Apostolic Church, I needed to know and do better. I did not allow my struggles and troubles to get in the way of this kind gesture, and I’m happy I returned the phones,” he added.

Advising fellow drivers, Frederick emphasised the need for people to focus on their integrity and the long term benefits of kindness than immediate satisfaction.

According to reports, they rob motorists of their valuables due to the absence of street lights on the stretch which connect traffic-prone Spintex road to Teshie through Burma Camp and La.

An uber driver, Enoch Lamptey, shared how he escaped a similar robbery attack at the Airport Hills overpass on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem programme, Wednesday.

He said two young men started pelting stones at his car in the middle of the road around 10:30 pm Saturday evening and he had to speed up to escape an attack.

“The stones hit my glass but I sped off so the passenger and myself escaped unhurt. I parked at Palace Mall to check the extent of damage done to my car,” he stated.

He said while checking his car, residents in the area also complained about the incessant attacks on motorists on the stretch.

“There is no street light on the road so it makes it impossible for drivers to see danger ahead. I have vowed not to ply that route in the evening,” he added.

He appealed to the government to fix the street lights to avert such unfortunate incidents.

Coronavirus: Uber driver evicted from home and left to die https://www.adomonline.com/coronavirus-uber-driver-evicted-from-home-and-left-to-die/ Tue, 28 Apr 2020 15:19:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1785720 The last time Mary Jayaseelan spoke to her husband Rajesh, he was about to be hooked up to a ventilator in a Covid ward.

Rajesh was being treated in Northwick Park Hospital in London, the city where he worked as an Uber driver for most of the year. Mary was 5,000 miles away in their family home in Bangalore, India, with their two young sons. Until that point he had repeatedly told her he would be fine, that he was feeling ill but she was not to worry, he’d get better – at 44 years old, he was young and otherwise healthy.

But on that call, he broke down and admitted: “Mary, I’m feeling a bit scared.”

Rajesh Jayaseelan died the following day.

Rajesh and Mary got married on 24 February 2014, and rented a home in Hulimavu, south Bangalore, that they shared with his 66-year-old mum. For most of the year, Rajesh rented a room in Harrow, north London and drove an Uber vehicle in the city. He’d work from late in the evening to the early hours of the morning – the busy hours – so he could save enough money to spend a few months with his family in India.

He enjoyed working as a driver, although he didn’t realise that his precarious gig economy job would leave him vulnerable in the global health crisis that would later emerge.

“He’d been living in London on-and-off for 22 years, and would come back to India for a few months at a time,” Mary says. “He loved London. He always used to talk to me about how beautiful London was, and so clean. I’ve never been to London, so he would describe it to me.”

They were very happy. Rajesh loved his wife, and playing with their two sons, aged six and four. When he wasn’t in India he would video-call them every day.

“He was also a really good singer,” Mary says, full of pride. “He sang a lot of Hindi songs.”

He was also a “humble, gentle person” his close friend Sunil Kumar adds. Sunil and Rajesh first met in 2011 – they were both from Bangalore, so mutual friends there put them in touch when Sunil moved to the UK. They would help each other navigate the UK’s various bureaucratic systems, loaned each other small amounts of money when needed, and Sunil and his wife would have Rajesh over for meals at their home in Hertfordshire – sending him back with several days’ worth of leftovers of delicious South Indian food.

Although Rajesh loved London, he didn’t plan to stay forever – he wanted to be reunited with his family in India. Renting their home in Hulimavu was relatively expensive, so during his last stay in Bangalore at the end of 2019, he and his wife took out a loan and bought land to build their own home. The loan was no problem, they thought – Rajesh would go back to London and put enough money aside to pay it off. The next time he travelled to Bangalore, he told his wife, it would be for good.

He came back to London on 15 January. Less than two weeks later, the first cases of coronavirus were reported in the UK.

Rajesh Jayaseelan with his wife Mary on their wedding day in 2014
Rajesh and Mary on their wedding day in February 2014

Although the virus had reached Britain, at this point Rajesh wasn’t too worried. Shops and restaurants were still open, people were still going into work and then going out. For everyone, including Uber drivers, it was business as usual, and not much changed for another month.

Then March came around, and the virus was passing from person to person within the UK. The number of cases – and, by now, deaths – was increasing every day. People were told to self-isolate for seven days if they had any symptoms – even mild ones, such as a fever or a persistent cough.

On 23 March, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a nationwide lockdown lasting an initial three weeks, meaning that most businesses would close, and people would only be allowed outside for one form of exercise a day and for essential trips to the shops, unless they were considered “essential” workers.

Like many Uber drivers, Rajesh continued to work at first, but he quickly developed flu-like symptoms and had to stop. His last job was on 25 March – a drop-off at Heathrow Airport.

His symptoms became much worse, and he was admitted to the hospital with dehydration. While there, he was tested for the coronavirus.

It came back positive.

Staff told Rajesh to go home, self-isolate, and to come back if his symptoms got worse. He did as he was told, and went home to his room. But things were about to get even worse.

“The landlord sent Rajesh out of the house for something, and when he came back the landlord had changed the locks, so he couldn’t get in,” Mary says. “He tried knocking on the door and asking the landlord to speak to him, but he wouldn’t open the door.”

His landlord didn’t know about his positive diagnosis – but he told him that, as an Uber driver, he might bring the coronavirus back into the house, and that it wasn’t a risk he was willing to take.

With nowhere else to turn, Rajesh was forced to sleep in his car for several nights.

“He had no food in there, nothing to eat at all,” Mary says.

At this point he called his friend Sunil for advice.

Rajesh with his two sons at home in Bangalore

“That was the last call he made to me,” Sunil says. “He didn’t go into details about what was happening to him, but because I work in the NHS, he was asking me questions like ‘How safe are we’, ‘Is it better to go to India’… things like that. He was asking me if I knew any routes, if there was any possible way he could go – he wanted to go to India and be with his family. But by that time there was a complete lockdown in India too.”

Sunil told him the best thing to do would be to stay at home, not to work, and to look into the financial support for self-employed workers the government had just announced, or the 14 days’ assistance offered by Uber.

Rajesh agreed, and explained he needed to find a new place to live because his landlord said he was high risk. But, Sunil says, he didn’t say that he’d already been kicked out: “He may have been embarrassed.”

Rajesh then went back to trying to call his landlord to plead with him to let him stay. There was no answer.

After days of searching, he eventually found another room in a shared house in Harrow. The new landlord made him pay £4,000 upfront – money he didn’t have, and Mary says he had to borrow.
