The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has appealed to district assemblies to support the Fire Volunteer Squads as both institutions join forces to reduce bushfires across the country.

Head of Public Relations of the GNFS, DOII Ellis Robinson Okoe, who made the appeal on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, on Wednesday, said the role of the volunteer was to mobilize and educate communities to understand the dangers of illegal fires and how to prevent them.

We need to work together to reduce bushfires to the barest minimum but the GNFS cannot do that alone that is why we need the District Assemblies to support our fire volunteers with equipment to fight bushfires, he said.

Mr Okoe who was speaking to recent fire outbreaks across the country said it was pathetic that a lack of logistics such as Wellington boots and machetes were hampering the delivery of the volunteers’ work.

He appealed to the assemblies to make logistics available to the volunteers because there are signs that this year’s harmattan would be severe.

DOII Okoe noted that fire prevention was a shared responsibility hence the need for the public to obey fire regulations to help the country record low fire incidents in the year.
