Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has described plans for the construction of a new parliamentary chamber as shameful.
The MP has argued against the construction of the new chamber, cautioning that there was more need on the nation’s agenda than constructing a new chamber for parliament.
“I see a number of schools in my constituency where students are still writing on their bellies and it breaks my heart. I see women who go long distances to carry water that those who are privileged to be in the positions we are in will not even use to wash our cars,” Mr Suhuyini noted in a radio interview.
“For us to have the privilege we have today, not to prioritise their problems and to think of the comfort of where we will sit and work, I think is a shame,” he added.
Meanwhile, two minority MPs, Ras Mubarak and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa of Kumbugu and North Tongu respectively, have also expressed similar sentiments on the new chamber which is expected to commence before the end of 2019.
The new Chamber, with a 450 sitting capacity is expected to house other facilities including diplomatic offices, a library, a museum, a church, a mosque, eateries, press conference rooms, galleries, a car park, an upper gallery garden, a post office and other facilities to complete the Parliamentary enclave.
