The acting communications director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has described the new mandatory towing fee as a ‘draconian law’ being introduced by the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA).

The Road Safety Commission has announced effective July 1, 2017, vehicle owners and motorcyclists will pay compulsory annual fees, tied to the acquisition of road worthy certificate, to cater for towing services.

The announcement has generated a chorus of disapproval from the public.

Chief Policy Analyst at the Ghana Institute of Public Policy Options (GIPPO) Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby on Thursday, called on the president, Nana Akufo-Addo to immediately halt the implementation of the policy.

Vice President of IMANI-Ghana, Kofi Bentil suspects the mandatory fee for towing services by the National Road safety Commission is an attempt to swindle the public.

According to him, there are existing laws that mandate Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to provide towing services in their respective jurisdictions.

“There is no proof paying this money which constitutes insurance will make these people do the actual work of towing”, he said.

The RSML and its allied companies will be allocated 85 percent of the funds, NRSC 5 percent, Ghana Police Service 5 percent, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) 2.5 percent while the remaining 2.5 percent will go to the Ministry of Finance

Commenting on this mandatory towing levy on Kumasi-based Hello FM, Yaw Adomako Baafi described the policy as a ‘draconian one; which when not abolished would affect the fortunes of the Akufo-Addo administration.

“This new mandatory toll level will not wash, it is a draconian policy we would not accept, it should be stopped immediately and not implemented…,” he charged.

According to Yaw Adomako Barfi, the mandatory road toll levy is being implemented by appointees of the Akufo-Addo administration who ‘did not know how we struggled to win power’.

To this end, he sworn that he and the other communicators of the party especially who struggled to bring the party to power will fight it.

“If the implementation of the mandatory road toll levy did not have any political implications, why didn’t the NDC which passed the law not implement it…we should be careful on imposing this levy…,” he warned further.

Yaw Adomako Barfi also warned that the footsodliers of the party are set to fight the new lotto courts that the National Lottery Authority is intending to introduce.
