Wilfred Sam Partey, father of a young man identified as Thomas Partey Nartey who lost his life in a clash between the Police and youth in the Lower Manya Municipality in the Eastern region on Wednesday, has given his own account of the incident.

Thomas, 24, lost his life after a gunshot penetrated his chest during a mass disconnection exercise over unpaid bills in the area by Power Distribution Services (PDS).

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem programme, Mr Partey said he is the family member the deceased had known since age four.

“Thomas is 24 years and not 14 but I am sure it is because of his size that is why people mistook him for a teenager. He was a free spirited, jovial person and my source of joy.

“He has been with me all these years after he lost both parents and it is unfortunate he died under this situation,” he narrated.

Mr Partey added that he has been to the hospital with the police to identify the body and the family is currently making preparations towards his burial.

Meanwhile, some residents have expressed their displeasure over the strategies for the mass disconnection exercise when they have not received any bill for months.

“We haven’t received bills for over 18 months now and when they started issuing the bills, we were given outrageous amounts to pay which we didn’t find favourable because we were initially paying not more than GH¢50.00.

“One woman sustained a gunshot wound around her shoulder on her way to pick her child from school,” they added.
