Deputy Defence Minister, Major Derrick Oduro has urged Ghanaians to refrain from a comparison between the soldier who was captured in a picture sipping kalyppo and Lance Corporal Wassah who was captured in a viral video criticising a plan by Parliament to construct a new $200m chamber.

To Major Oduro, the military command was fair in its dealings with Lance Corporal Wassah.

“What you may see as an offence as a civilian may not be an offence in the military, the soldier in Kalyppo issue did not commit any offence,” he claimed.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Starr FM, monitored by Adomonline.com, Major Oduro said the circumstances of the two soldiers were viewed differently by the military.

“Every issue is investigated in the military, the fact that some big man drank something or ate something does not mean a soldier cannot also go to the market and buy same food or drink.  That matter was investigated and the soldiers found nothing wrong with it,” he said.

Ahead of the 2016 polls, Private Osei Owusu was captured in uniform sipping Kalyppo, a craze that had gone viral on social media after the then flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo was captured sipping kalyppo. It practically became a campaign tool.
