Former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Cynthia Mamle Morrison, has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to take urgent action over an alleged defilement case involving a police officer and his biological daughter.
She expressed concern that the matter has not received the attention it deserves, especially given that the suspect is a member of the police service.
“I don’t know if the IGP has heard it, but I don’t know why they will sit aloof and not say anything, especially when the man is a police officer,” she said.
Mrs Morrison added that she intends to personally follow up with the relevant authorities.
“As a woman, I will try and contact them and see the way forward,” she said.
She stressed the need for immediate relocation and protection of the victim.
“We need to relocate the girl to the safest place. The interest of the child, her welfare and education are important,” she stated.
She also noted that the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) should be fully involved in the case.
“DOVVSU is under the police and the Ministry of Gender, and I believe once she is a minor, they will know what is going on,” she added.
Mrs Morrison further emphasized that both the child and the mother may need psychological support.
“The woman also needs counselling, just as the girl,” she said.
The comments follow allegations made by the child’s mother during an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem programme.
According to the mother, the abuse allegedly began when the girl went to stay with her father in Garu after years of not knowing him.
She claimed that the father allegedly forced himself on the girl during her first visit.
The mother further stated that the child later underwent a medical examination at an undisclosed hospital, where she was diagnosed with HIV.
