Former Local Government Minister, Akwasi Oppong Fosu, has indicated that he will officially announce whether or not he will contest for the National Chairmanship position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stressing that consultations are currently ongoing.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News , Mr. Oppong Fosu underscored the need for party members to avoid what he described as a “rush into positions,” warning that such early moves could create tension within the party.

According to him, discussions are ongoing regarding his role within the party, but he declined to disclose specific details, noting that the consultation process is still underway.

“At the appropriate time, I’ll put out my intentions. There are consultations going on in my role within the party,” he stated.

He added that the consultations are expected to conclude by the end of June, after which a “big announcement” would be made regarding his political direction and role.

Meanwhile, the Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress has cautioned members of the party against engaging in premature presidential campaign activities, urging discipline and unity as the party focuses on governance and internal stability.

The caution follows a recent meeting between the Council and President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, May 29, 2026, where discussions centred on strengthening party unity, enforcing internal discipline, and supporting the government’s “Resetting Agenda.”
