Former Black Stars winger David Accam has backed head coach Carlos Queiroz to take a firm, authoritative approach as Ghana prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese tactician was appointed in April on a short-term deal, replacing Otto Addo, and is expected to lead Ghana into the tournament in North America.

For Accam, Queiroz’s arrival represents a timely reset for the Black Stars as they aim to rebuild competitiveness on the global stage.

Queiroz, 73, brings extensive international experience, having managed several high-profile national teams and clubs over the course of his career. His reputation, Accam believes, could be key to stabilising Ghana’s performances at the highest level.

Speaking in an interview with Graphic Sports, Accam expressed confidence in the coach’s credentials while stressing the need for strong leadership.

“Carlos Queiroz is a big coach. He has coached top teams and countries, so I do not think this challenge is too big for him,” Accam said.

“He has the experience. What he needs to do is be firm, stamp his authority on the team and bring something different from what we have seen before.

“Hopefully, he can build a solid team that plays as one and fights to win for the country,” he added.

Ghana, set for their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

The Black Stars have already arrived in the United States and will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field. They will then face England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium before concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

As part of their build-up, Ghana will also play a final warm-up match against Jamaica on June 10.
