Spanish giants Real Madrid have reportedly made contact with former midfielder Michael Essien as they step up their interest in highly rated Ghanaian youngster Caleb Yirenkyi, according to Danish outlet Tipsbladet.
The report claims the La Liga side are exploring a potential move for the FC Nordsjaelland midfielder, who is valued at around €30 million, with Los Blancos keen to secure his services ahead of growing competition across Europe.
Essien, who played under Jose Mourinho at both Chelsea and Real Madrid and now works as FC Nordsjaelland assistant coach, is said to be assisting the Spanish club in their pursuit of the 20-year-old, amid reports that Mourinho is set for a return as head coach at the Bernabeu.
Before Real Madrid’s interest emerged, FC Nordsjaelland had already rejected an €18 million bid from a Premier League club in January for the highly rated midfielder.
Portuguese giants FC Porto have also entered the race and are reportedly prepared to offer around €20 million for the Ghana international.
Yirenkyi boosted his rising reputation after scoring in Ghana’s 1-1 international friendly draw against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium.
The former Right to Dream Academy graduate enjoyed an impressive campaign in Denmark, making 30 appearances in the recently concluded league season, scoring two goals and providing six assists.
He has also been included in Ghana’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
