The Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GHIS) has built a Prime Meridian Monument worth GHc 90,000.00 at Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern region.

According to the President of GHIS, Mrs Ama Edumadze-Acquah, the establishment of the monument forms part of the Corporate Social Responsibility to society and in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the institute.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Mrs Edumadze-Acquah said the institute chose Somanya to increase awareness of it being a centre where the Greenwich Meridian Line passes with plans underway to construct similar monuments at Bimbila, Kwahu, and Kete Krachi which have also been identified as centres.

“This monument will also serve as a tourist attraction where people can learn a lot from,” she said.

Mrs Edumadze-Acquah used the opportunity to appeal for support for the development and growth of the institute.

“We at the Ghana Institute of Surveyors will not wait for people to come on board before erecting same things at the remaining places but will appeal to all Ghanaians for support as we continue to do our best from our little resources,” she appealed.

The Municipal Chief Executive of Yilo Krobo, Ebenezer Tetteh Kupualor, expressed appreciation to the institute and pledged their commitment to maintain the monument.
