Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has stressed that goal scoring is a craft that must be developed through consistent practice, arguing that natural talent alone is not enough to become a top striker.

Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer and the highest-scoring African player in FIFA World Cup history, enjoyed a prolific career that yielded 228 senior goals, cementing his status as one of the continent’s most accomplished forwards.

Speaking on his approach to finishing, the former Sunderland and Al Ain star dismissed the belief that goal scoring depends on luck or spiritual intervention. He insisted it is a technical ability that can be taught, refined and mastered over time.

“Because goal scoring is an art. It’s not about any pastor praying for you or going anywhere to do. No, no, no, no. It’s an act,” Gyan told Citi Sports.

He emphasised the need to nurture young strikers through structured training and repetition rather than relying on superstition.

“So we have to just groom the young ones, teach them how to score goals. That is how we came out with the act of goal scoring. You know, this is an act,” he added.

Gyan further underscored that elite finishing is built through continuous practice, not external influences.

“Goal scoring is an act. Okay. It’s not about anything. You have to just practice it.”
