Vice president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Akwasi Afriyie has refuted claims that the association sacked Coach Kwesi Appiah for performing badly at the 2014 World Cup tournament held in Brazil.

He told journalist in Accra after the reappointment of the former Kotoko defender as a new substantive coach of the senior national team that the FA offered Kwesi Appiah the needed support even after the tournament.

“I have heard some of you the journalists say Kwesi Appiah was sacked by the GFA after the country’s 2014 World Cup but this isn’t the case.

“The truth of the matter is the FA had a press conference with him [Kwesi Appiah] at the Alisa Hotel after the mundial and told him we had fate in him and even renewed his contract so I feel bad when I hear people making such false reports,” he said.

The former Asante Kotoko player was appointed as the Black Stars head coach for the next two years with an option of two years extension.

He replaces Avram Grant who left the Black Stars job after a disastrous 2017 AFCON campaign in Gabon.
