After some observation in the Volta and other regions, breast cancer awareness group, Breasted One Foundation, believes okro could help fight breast cancer.

Since no scientific research has been conducted into the vegetable’s natural fighting agent in that regard, the foundation is calling for dedicated research of its potential.

Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Naa Korshie Quaye has, in an interview with Adom News said the foundation recorded less breast lump in some part of the Volta region.

“We spent about three days in the Volta and did the same in another region. It was interesting to note that only two or so ladies had the lump in the Volta region. The other regions had so many ladies having breast lump relating to breast cancer,” she said.

According to her, further research will confirm or otherwise of whether consuming okro could help in fighting breast cancer.

“Because consumption of okro is high in the Volta region, we believe it plays an active role in the general health of residents including dealing with breast cancer. But deep scientific research will confirm or otherwise of this observation,” she recommended.

Naa Korshie Quaye is of the view that some Ghanaians are ditching local foods and are heavily relying on foreign ones which are gradually affecting their health.

“Some of these strange diseases being recorded were non-existent in the past but today it has come to stay all because of the food we eat.

Meanwhile, Naa Korshie Quaye is encouraging parents to introduce local food to their children instead of relying on junk food which has negative health effects.

“It’s high time we revisited our past by eating what we grow locally,” she said.

She also took the opportunity to encourage regular breast screening to avoid late detection of the disease and warned against relying on spiritual help when one is diagnosed.

“ It’s good to pray but seek medical help when you’re diagnosed. The disease is not spiritual and doesn’t allow your friends to dictate to you on what you should do,” Naa Korshie advised.
