Kwabena Bempong, a road consultant, says the government must be able to withhold the monies of contractors who do shoddy works in constructing roads.

According to Mr Bempong, the refusal of some Ghanaian contractors to adopt the culture of maintenance has contributed greatly to the menace of bad roads in Ghana.

“It is expected that our roads when constructed last over 15 years before deteriorating but we don’t see that because contractors don’t undertake the accurate practices which will sustain the roads. We must treat our roads the same way we renovate our homes,” he said.

Exposing the weaknesses in road construction by contractors on Fabewoso, an anti-corruption segment on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Bempong urged the government to adopt a more punitive measure to end the menace.

“Government must be able to withhold the monies of contractors who do shoddy jobs and if it happens that they receive all payments before the deterioration, the government must be able to raise a road insurance against those individuals for refund,” he urged.

Explaining the stages of road construction, Mr Bempong said “the contractors are supposed to undergo a primary facial design and return to the site after three months but most of the time some contractors don’t return to the site because there has been no initial payment or funds to continue the project.”
