The government has inaugurated a new governing board for the Internal Audit Agency (IAA), tasking its members with leading reforms aimed at reducing public sector waste, improving accountability and ensuring value for money in the use of state resources.

The nine-member board was sworn into office by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, who urged the members to reposition the Agency and help address persistent weaknesses in public financial management highlighted in successive Auditor-General’s reports.

A major responsibility of the board will be to oversee the review of the Internal Audit Agency Act, 2003, and implement reforms intended to strengthen the Agency’s mandate and operational effectiveness.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Sunday, June 13, 2026, Dr Forson stressed the need to restore confidence in Ghana’s public financial management system.

“We must turn the Internal Audit Agency around and restore it to the purpose for which it was established,” he stated.

According to the Finance Minister, recurring audit infractions identified in Auditor-General’s reports point to gaps in accountability systems and weaknesses in the internal audit function across public institutions.

He called on the board to develop strategies that will promote compliance and ensure that internal auditors who fail to perform their duties are held accountable.

“The level of waste is too high, and the Ghanaian taxpayer is losing too much. We need to find a way to fix it,” Dr Forson said.

He further advocated stronger professional development programmes to equip internal auditors with the skills needed to effectively perform their duties and enhance risk management practices across the public sector.

Dr Forson noted that efforts to strengthen the Internal Audit Agency form part of the government’s broader fiscal reform agenda aimed at restoring confidence in public finances and improving governance.

The newly inaugurated board comprises professionals with expertise in internal auditing, finance, accountancy and human resource management. Members have been tasked with developing measures to strengthen accountability and improve the Agency’s overall impact.

Responding on behalf of the board, Chairperson Professor Joshua Yindenaba Abor described the appointment as a “noble call to duty” and pledged the board’s commitment to promoting accountability and ensuring value for money in the management of public resources.

Professor Abor assured the Finance Minister that the board would work diligently to strengthen the Agency and support its mandate of improving governance, transparency and financial discipline across the public sector.
