Young people, particularly women, have been encouraged to prioritise their education and ensure they are financially and emotionally prepared before having children in order to help reduce child neglect and the growing phenomenon of streetism.

The advice was given by the President of the Yen Ara Nkonkonko Association, Sophia Quarshie, during a visit to the New Life Children’s Home in Nungua, where the association donated assorted items as part of activities marking its 60th anniversary celebration.

Speaking to Adom News after the presentation, Mrs. Quarshie urged young women to be mindful of the consequences of early childbearing and the responsibilities that come with parenthood.

“Young people, especially young women, should focus on their education and avoid having children when they are not financially and emotionally ready to care for them,” she said.

According to her, many children end up on the streets because some parents are unable to provide the necessary care, support, and resources needed for their upbringing.

Mrs. Quarshie also disclosed that the association is currently working with the Department of Social Welfare to adopt a girl from the orphanage and support her through her educational journey.

“We are in the process with Social Welfare to adopt a girl child from this home, take her in, and support her through her education up to the university level so she can graduate and become self-reliant,” she stated.

As part of the donation, the association presented 15 bags of rice, eight boxes of one-litre cooking oil, 10 bags of toilet rolls, 50 bags of sachet water, 30 crates of eggs, six cartons of oats, 70 loaves of bread, clothing and socks to support the children at the facility.

The Founder of the New Life Children’s Home and Chief of Nungua expressed appreciation to the association for the gesture, describing the donation as timely and beneficial to the welfare of the children.

He also called for a collective effort to improve living conditions in the country, stressing the need to create more opportunities for young people to succeed locally rather than seeking better prospects abroad under difficult circumstances.

The donation formed part of the Yen Ara Nkonkonko Association’s activities to celebrate its 60 years of service and community support.
