The High Court in Accra has struck out an application filed by lawyer and former Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, seeking permission to withdraw as counsel for New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The withdrawal was in connection with the Samreboi illegal mining case, although Mr Appiah-Kubi declined to disclose the reasons for his decision.
The court’s decision on Monday, June 15, 2026, means Mr Appiah-Kubi remains on record as legal counsel in the ongoing case involving the outspoken NPP chairman unless further legal steps are taken.
Mr Appiah-Kubi had earlier filed a motion seeking leave of the court to discontinue his representation of Chairman Wontumi. Under Ghana’s legal procedures, a lawyer handling a matter before a court may be required to formally seek the court’s approval to withdraw from a case, particularly where proceedings are already underway.
The application had generated public interest, with the office of the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, challenging the move.
In its notice dated June 12, 2026, the Attorney-General’s Office argued that the application raises fundamental legal questions that must first be resolved before the court can consider granting leave for counsel to withdraw.
The State’s objection was based on two principal grounds: jurisdiction, capacity and standing.
