The Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, has called for urgent improvements in Ghana’s social welfare system, stressing that a stronger system will encourage victims of domestic violence to report abuse.
He made the call during a thought leadership programme on domestic violence hosted by Adom TV, Adom FM, and Asempa FM, under the theme “Safe Homes, Strong Society: Ending Domestic Violence and Hidden Abuse Together.”
According to Sheikh Shaibu, his personal visit to a social welfare office revealed concerning conditions, including a lack of basic facilities to adequately support victims.
“I have visited a social welfare office and it was very disappointing. The conditions are appalling,” he said.
He noted that the poor state of the system affects staff morale and limits their ability to effectively assist victims, adding that this may discourage people from seeking help.
Sheikh Shaibu expressed concern that social welfare may not be receiving the necessary attention as a national priority, despite its critical role in protecting vulnerable individuals.
He therefore urged the relevant ministry to invest in and strengthen the sector, emphasising that a well-resourced and efficient system would build public confidence.
“If the social welfare system is in good standing, people will feel confident to report such cases,” he stated.
The programme forms part of broader efforts to address domestic violence and improve support structures for victims across the country.
