The Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, has urged parents to adopt a more thoughtful and individualised approach to parenting.
He stressed that understanding a child’s unique needs is key to proper upbringing.
He made the remarks during a thought leadership programme on domestic violence hosted by Adom TV, Adom FM, and Asempa FM, themed “Safe Homes, Strong Society: Ending Domestic Violence and Hidden Abuse Together.”
According to Sheikh Shaibu, cultural and religious values emphasise the need to protect and nurture children, but some parenting approaches, particularly harsh disciplinary methods, may be harmful.

He noted that children differ in learning abilities and behaviour, making it important for parents to tailor their approach to suit each child.
“There are different types of children. Some are slow learners, others are fast learners, so you need to know the child and how to train them,” he said.
He further highlighted the importance of a supportive home environment, especially as corporal punishment becomes less accepted in modern society.
He encouraged parents to listen more to their children, warning that failure to do so may push them to seek guidance elsewhere.
Sheikh Shaibu likened children to fragile eggs that require careful handling, adding that the environment and upbringing of a child significantly shape their future.
He therefore called on parents to be more mindful, patient, and responsive in raising their children to help curb domestic violence and promote healthier family relationships.
