The representative of the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection, Abena Aprakua Badu-Aboagye, has stated that parental neglect is a key factor contributing to domestic violence and child abuse cases in Ghana.

Speaking at a thought leadership programme hosted by Adom TV, Adom FM and Asempa FM, Abena Aprakua noted that many abuse cases originate from a lack of proper parental care and supervision.

The programme, themed “Safe Homes, Strong Society: Ending Domestic Violence and Hidden Abuse Together,” brought together stakeholders to discuss solutions to domestic abuse and child protection challenges.

According to her, while economic hardship and other life challenges also contribute to abuse, the root cause in many instances is the failure of parents to fulfil their responsibilities.

“Most of these issues start from the home. If parents do not do their due diligence, that is where the problem begins,” she said.

Abena Aprakua explained that although Ghana has policies and systems in place to protect children, including a structured child protection framework, these mechanisms are often undermined when parents fail to play their role.

She added that the Ministry of Gender continues to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to address such cases and ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals, particularly children.

She further urged parents to be more vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their children, stressing that stronger parental involvement is essential in preventing abuse and building safer communities.
