Asante Kotoko have dismissed reports suggesting interim head coach Prince Yaw Owusu has gone missing from the club’s camp, describing the claims as false and misleading.
Speculation intensified on Thursday, April 16, with multiple reports alleging that Owusu had quietly left the team’s base without informing club officials following their heavy 4-0 defeat to Medeama last Sunday. The rumours further claimed the coach feared for his safety after purportedly receiving threats in the aftermath of the loss.
However, the club has swiftly moved to set the record straight.
In an official statement signed by Communications Director Samuel Sarfo Duku, Kotoko clarified that Owusu’s absence was both communicated and approved by management.
“The club wishes to firmly debunk rumours suggesting that Interim Head Coach Prince Yaw Owusu has left the team’s camp without notice. These claims are untrue. Prince duly sought permission from management to attend to urgent family matters as he continues to mourn the passing of his beloved mother. He is expected to return to Kumasi this morning, and any further updates or decisions will be officially communicated in due course,” the statement read.
The development comes at a difficult time for the Porcupine Warriors, whose Ghana Premier League title ambitions have taken a significant hit. Kotoko now trail by 10 points with just five matches remaining, while their recent form has drawn growing concern among supporters.
Owusu, who stepped in on an interim basis following the mid-season departure of Karim Zito, has endured a challenging spell, struggling to steady the team’s performances.
With inconsistency persisting and the title race slipping away, pressure continues to mount on the club as the season approaches its conclusion.
