Ghanaian rapper Medikal has stirred debate on social media after clapping back at a fan who attempted to downplay the relevance of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
The exchange began on X (formerly Twitter) when a user took a swipe at local recognition, writing: “Bro your mates are fighting for Grammy you’re here fighting over TGMA with a 24-year-old Black Sherif who’s asleep by now. Smh.”
Responding to the post, Medikal defended the prestige of the Ghanaian awards scheme, stating: “Well, TGMA is my Grammy, my World Cup be that.”
His reply has since generated buzz online, with fans divided over the comparison between local and international accolades, while others applauded his stance on valuing homegrown recognition.
Medikal’s response comes as he enjoys a strong showing in this year’s awards, earning five nominations, including Artiste of the Year, Collaboration of the Year, Most Popular Song, Best Hiplife/Hip Hop Act, and Best Highlife Song.
The Telecel Ghana Music Awards continues to serve as a major platform celebrating Ghanaian talent, with this year’s edition expected to be highly competitive.
