Traders at New Makola Market No. 2 have staged a protest, accusing the Makola Market Company (MMC) and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) of imposing what they describe as excessive and unjustified shop rents.
They claim that monthly rent has been hiked from GHS 1,000 to GHS 1,500, a burden they say is unsustainable.
Speaking to Adom News, Jessica Adukwei, a member of the market executive body, alleged that poor management under MMC, including deteriorating infrastructure and sanitation challenges, has discouraged customers, causing a significant drop in sales.
She added that frequent and sharp rent increases have compounded traders’ financial difficulties.
The traders are appealing to the government to return the market’s management to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), which they believe would ensure better oversight and accountability.
Acting secretary George Addai Marfo said the traders will formally present a petition at Jubilee House tomorrow, calling for urgent government intervention and redress.
