Former England striker Michael Owen has identified Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo as a potential long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah at Liverpool, should the Egyptian star leave Anfield.

Salah’s future at the club remains uncertain following his public criticism of Liverpool and head coach Arne Slot after being benched for a third consecutive Premier League match against Leeds United.

The 31-year-old is set to join Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday, with his absence potentially extending into January, fuelling speculation about a possible mid-season departure.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Owen stressed the need for Liverpool to plan ahead and secure a suitable successor if Salah moves on. He praised Semenyo’s rapid development at Bournemouth, noting his six Premier League goals this season and growing impact on matches.

“He is a brilliant player,” Owen said. “He scores goals – and we don’t know if Mohamed Salah will stay or leave, but if he leaves, Semenyo should be his replacement.”

Salah’s omission from Liverpool’s Champions League victory over Inter Milan on Tuesday has further intensified speculation about his future. The Egyptian forward, who has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, is also expected to miss the Reds’ upcoming Premier League clash with Brighton this weekend.
