Mahama urges investment in transport infrastructure to boost intra-African trade

President John Dramani Mahama has called on African governments to prioritize strategic investment in transportation infrastructure to strengthen inter-African trade and reduce dependence on overseas routes.

He was speaking at the Jubilee House in Accra after receiving credentials from newly appointed High Commissioners and Ambassadors.

President Mahama expressed concern that some goods are still routed through Europe before reaching their final African destinations, a situation he believes undermines the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The President stressed the urgent need for efficient regional trade routes that will remove logistical barriers and make cross-border commerce smoother and more cost-effective.

During discussions with Kenya’s High Commissioner to Ghana, President Mahama highlighted the importance of developing innovative strategies to boost trade and enhance security across the continent.

He further disclosed that Ghana is seeking to deepen bilateral relations with Kenya, particularly by learning from the East African nation’s successful tourism sector.
