Former SWAG President Ackah Anthony passes on

Veteran sports journalist and former President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), Mr. Ackah Anthony, has sadly passed away, according to a report by Joy Sports.

Mr. Anthony, who served as SWAG president from 2007 to 2015, died in the early hours of Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the Police Hospital in Accra.

A respected figure in Ghanaian sports journalism, Mr. Anthony was also the former Assistant Editor of Graphic Sports at the Graphic Communications Group Limited.

He was widely known for his hard-hitting and insightful Candid Corner column, published on the back page of The Mirror.

The column tackled critical issues in Ghana’s sporting landscape and was well-regarded for holding authorities accountable.

As the sixth president of SWAG, he championed several key reforms, including consistent advocacy on industry matters and the successful organisation of numerous editions of the prestigious SWAG Awards, Ghana’s longest-running sports award scheme.

Mr. Anthony also led the redesign and renovation of the SWAG Club House in Dansoman, Accra, and initiated a national membership drive to expand the association’s reach.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn — a former Director at the Ministry of Information — and four children.
