The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is expected to take a final decision on the Black Stars’ technical and backroom staff following the appointment of Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The restructuring comes after Ghana sealed qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with changes already affecting the technical setup that worked under former coach Otto Addo. Addo has since been dismissed after a run of defeats against Austria and Germany during the March international window.

As part of the ongoing overhaul, former technical advisor and GFA Director of Football Winfried Schäfer has also been relieved of his duties.

Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum disclosed that Queiroz, 73, has proposed bringing in additional backroom personnel to strengthen his technical team.

He explained that the existing technical staff—comprising John Paintsil, Desmond Ofei, Alain Ravera, Kim Lars Björkegren, Fatawu Dauda, Kris Perquy, Gregory De Grauwe, José Daniel Martínez Alfonso, Carlos Lozano Romero, Issah Amadou, and Abdul Rahman Alhassan—remain in post for now, with no final decision taken on their future.

“Carlos Queiroz has proposed bringing in additional backroom staff to support his work, but the current technical team remains in place. No final decision has been made yet.”

Queiroz is expected to officially begin work with the Black Stars next month, starting with an international friendly against Mexico, followed by another preparatory fixture against Wales on June 2.

Ghana, set for its fifth World Cup appearance, has been drawn in Group L and will open its campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

After early exits in 2014 in Brazil and 2022 in Qatar, Queiroz faces the task of rebuilding confidence and guiding the Black Stars to a stronger showing on football’s biggest stage.
