A carefully coordinated intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service has led to the arrest of two key suspects linked to the deadly robbery attack on the Berekum Chelsea team bus.

Following the April 12 attack on the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road, which claimed the life of footballer Dominic Frimpong, the Inspector-General of Police deployed a special team to track down the perpetrators.

The team, made up of officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate, Anti-Robbery Unit, CID Headquarters and regional commands, launched a targeted manhunt using intelligence gathering and surveillance.

Their efforts paid off on April 15, when they traced the suspects to Atimatim in Kumasi.

Police say the operation turned confrontational when the suspects, identified as Mohammed Ahmed, alias “I Can Do,” and Bawa Gideon, attempted to flee and allegedly opened fire on officers.

The police team returned fire and successfully subdued and arrested the suspects.

A search conducted after the arrest led to the retrieval of a pistol loaded with two rounds of ammunition, BB cartridges, pepper spray, a locally made firearm, desert boots, mobile phones and a black pullover believed to have been used during their operations.

During interrogation, Mohammed Ahmed reportedly confessed to participating in multiple robbery attacks, including the Berekum Chelsea bus incident.

He is currently receiving treatment under police guard at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, while Bawa Gideon remains in custody assisting with investigations.

Police say the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle the robbery network, with three other suspects still on the run as the manhunt continues.
