Pediatric Cardiologist at the National Cardiothoracic Center of the Department of Child Health at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Doctor Nana Akyaa Yao, says out of 8,000 to 9,000 children who are born every year at the hospital, 800 to 900 of them suffer heart problem.
According to her, there are varying degrees of heart problems that the children suffer, ranging from mild to severe.

According to her, statistics show one to two children born every week are born with some heart condition.
Dr. Akyaa added that unfortunately, children who weigh below 8 kilos are unable to undergo surgery because there is no equipment to carry out such procedures even though there are qualified doctors to do so.

She said the situation is fast getting out of hand and urgent attention needs to be given to it to address.
She is therefore appealing to corporate bodies to come to their aid and help them get the needed equipment for such procedures.
Nana Akyaa Yao said this when St Johns Hospital in collaboration with a French NGO engaged in a free heart screening for children at Taifa in Accra.
Children who will be identified with heart conditions would be flown to France for treatment.
