A woman has died in a horror crash as her devastated boyfriend reveals he was about to propose.

Greg Peters said the last thing his partner Anna Ledgar said to him was “I love you”.

Partner Greg Peters said he was planning to propose

Mr Peters had been planning to propose but she died before he could pop the question, Stoke On Trent Live reports.

The gym instructor, 28, was driving to work at Macclesfield FC on Monday when she was involved in a crash between Uttoxeter and Rocester in Staffordshire.

Emergency services closed the road for six hours and Miss Ledgar was rushed to hospital where she sadly died the day after with Mr Peters at her side.

The pair – who met online during the first lockdown – were given a blessing by a vicar at the hospital before Miss Ledgar’s death.

Miss Ledgar had just been headhunted by Macclesfield FC to become the club’s personal trainer.

Mr Peters told StaffordshireLive: “I was up early Monday morning, leaving for work at 6.30am and Anna was on the late shift at her work, so she had a little lie in before walking the dogs and driving to Macclesfield.

“I remember it so clearly. I came in just before I was leaving, kissed her on the forehead and said ‘goodbye, I love you’. She said ‘I love you’ back.

“As I was walking out, she lifted her head, turned to me all sleepy eyed and reached out to me, asking for my hand back.

“So of course I went back for another kiss and a cuddle. She loved her cuddles. Her face, while reaching out to me, will be in my head forever.”

The couple moved in months after meeting and were close to buying their first home when tragedy struck.

Mr Peters said: “I’ve got no idea what to do now. It’ll be hard for me to afford the house without Anna, but I’ll find a way to make it work and do it for her.”

Miss Ledgar had just moved gyms and was about to start as a personal trainer at Macclesfield FC after being scouted three months ago.

Peters said: “This was her dream job. She had worked so hard to be able to run her own gym and now it was happening.

“She was very nervous at first, as she wasn’t too sure if she had the experience to pull it off. But, my word, she had the drive.

“If Anna was going to do something, she’d do it 110 per cent. She worked so hard. She was only in that job for three months before the accident.

“Me and Anna had only been officially together for 18 months, but for once in my life, I had a plan with Anna, as I knew she was the one – she was perfect for me.

“She changed my life and made me smile so much, encouraged me with my golf, got me to final stage of qualifying for the Open and pushed me on with every tournament.”

BROKEN

Greg said he was left broken as he saw Miss Ledgar lying in her hospital bed.

He told StaffordshireLive: “My plan a few months ago was to buy a house and do it up together. Then, I was going to ask her to marry me and the following year get married and try for children.

“So when Anna was lying there in the hospital bed, it was breaking me that I couldn’t marry her and make her my wife; give her the wedding day she really wanted.

“When I explained my plans to a nurse she said ‘we can get a vicar to give you a blessing of your relationship’, which was amazing. The lift that it gave me was amazing.

“It could never be a legal wedding or anything like that, but for me to be able to give Anna my nan’s engagement ring and slide it onto her finger, to me, she’s now my wife even if it’s not officially legal.

“It was a special moment in my life. I just hope she could hear us and hear our song that we played through my phone.”

Anna’s family only recently discovered she was on the organ donor register – a move that has already helped six patients in the last few days.

Greg added: “Never ever miss that kiss, that cuddle and saying I love you to the ones you live.

“If I hadn’t have said that to Anna, I’d be in such a deeper and nastier place in my head right now, but knowing that every day she knew I loved her and she loved me makes me feel so special.”

Macclesfield FC has also paid tribute to Miss Ledgar and has launched a GoFundMe page.

Proceeds from this will go towards her family’s designated charity.
