Member of Parliament (MP) for Abetifi in the Kwahu East district in the Eastern Region, Brian Acheampong, has hinted that government will devise stringent security measures to monitor the activities of vigilante groups in the country.
A vigilante group, Delta Force, believed to be affiliated to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), assaulted the President’s Ashanti Regional security coordinator appointee.
The group destroyed state properties and manhandled the appointee in a bloody attack when they stormed the premises of the Regional Coordinating Council on Friday.
Addressing a question regarding activities of vigilante groups before the Appointments Committee, Mr Acheampong who is also nominee for Minister of State at the Presidency, indicated that security of the citizenry are at the top of his priority check-list.
He said, he will perform in-depth investigations into the formation of the respective groups and make them aware of the supremacy of rule of law in the country backed by the constitution of the land.
“I’m in much support to protect the people. I need to get more information on these vigilante groups. We are guided by laws in this country and anyone that fouls the law is supposed to be dealt by the law…” he disclosed.
Activities of vigilante groups largely linked to the NDC and NPP continue to raise concerns in the country.
These groups namely the Azorka Boys of the NDC and Invincible Forces the NPP swing to action after their party is voted into power.
Also last Friday, another NPP-linked group, Delta Forces, massed up at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to drive out the newly appointed Regional Security Coorinator, George Agyei.
The group contends he played no role in the struggle to bring the NPP into power and has suggested that he should be removed without delay.
