Deputy Communications Minister under the erstwhile John Mahama administration, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has described the renaming of public universities after some Ghanaian political leaders as a projection of nondescript heroes.
To Mr Ofosu, the renaming spree is a deliberate attempt by the Akufo-Addo-led government to project the names of the Danquah-Busia stalwarts in Ghana.
Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam show, the former Deputy Minister said there was nothing wrong with government’s decision to rename public universities after some Ghanaians, but it must be done in a balanced way.

“The Akufo-Addo-led government is only seeking to exploit the resources and mandate given them to project their nondescript heroes and in principle, there is nothing wrong with naming universities after Ghanaians but the way they are going about it is wrong,” he said.
He said “no Governing Council can rename a public university without the President’s approval and people have started silence protest on social media to register their displeasure at the decision of the government to rename public universities after New Patriotic Party stalwarts.”

His comment follows reports that the government may soon rename University of Ghana as J.B. Danquah University of Ghana following the latest proposal coming from the Governing Council of the University of Energy and Natural Resources to rename the school after Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia, Prime Minister of the Government of the 2nd Republic.
