The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has called on workers across the region to remain dedicated, innovative, and professional in their roles to help drive economic growth and sustainable development.

He made the call during the 2026 May Day celebration held in Ho, which brought together labour unions, security personnel, students, and other stakeholders under the theme: “Pivoting to Growth, Jobs and Sustainable Livelihoods Beyond the Macroeconomic Stability.”

Addressing the gathering, the Minister commended Ghanaian workers for their resilience and contribution to national development, especially in the face of ongoing economic challenges.

He emphasised the critical role of workers in building a strong economy and urged both public and private sector employees to demonstrate discipline and commitment in their duties.

“Development is a shared responsibility. As government continues to play its role, I urge all workers to remain dedicated, innovative, and professional in their respective fields. Let us take pride in our work and strive for excellence in all that we do,” he said.

Mr Gunu also appealed to employers to prioritise the welfare of their workforce and promote fairness and cooperation in the workplace.

“I also call on employers to continue to invest in the welfare of their workers and to promote a culture of fairness, respect, and cooperation. Industrial harmony is key to progress,” he added.

He stressed the importance of unity and collective effort in achieving development goals.

“Regardless of our professions or backgrounds, we are all working towards a common goal—building a better Volta Region and a stronger Ghana,” he noted.

The Minister further encouraged workers to embrace technology, modern skills, and creativity to stay relevant in an evolving job market.

Reaffirming government’s commitment, he highlighted initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and expanding job opportunities.

“As a Regional Minister, I wish to assure you that government remains committed to creating opportunities that will improve your livelihoods. Through initiatives such as the 24-hour economy, we are working to expand job opportunities, boost productivity, and support businesses,” he said.

He added that skills development, particularly among the youth, remains a priority to prepare them for the demands of a modern economy.

“A skilled workforce is a strong workforce, and a strong workforce is the engine of development,” he stated.

The celebration featured colourful march-past displays by various labour unions, security agencies, and institutions across the region. Outstanding workers and organisations were also honoured for their contributions.

May Day, also known as Workers’ Day, is celebrated annually to recognise the efforts of workers and promote their rights and welfare.
