An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a 43-year-old Nigerian woman into custody after convicting her on charges of human trafficking and illegal entry into Ghana.

The accused, Eugenia Ifeoma, pleaded guilty to two counts of human trafficking and guilty with explanation to a charge of illegal entry.

According to prosecutors from the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Ifeoma recruited, transported, and harboured two Nigerian victims, aged 19 and 17, for prostitution in Ghana.

During proceedings, Ifeoma told the court she did not know it was unlawful to bring the victims into Ghana.

The prosecution said Ifeoma, a commercial sex worker based in Asankragua, travelled to Nigeria on March 2, 2026, where she met the victims’ brother. The brother reportedly asked her to assist his two sisters in traveling to Ghana.

Although she initially declined, prosecutors said she later agreed and paid for their transportation into the country.

Upon arriving in Ghana, the victims were taken to Asankragua, where Ifeoma allegedly supplied them with condoms and required them to remit GHC200 daily from their earnings.

The court further heard that she threatened the victims with spiritual consequences through a fetish priest if they attempted to flee.

The Ghana Immigration Service said intelligence gathered by officers in Asankragua led to Ifeoma’s arrest. Investigations also revealed that she entered Ghana through unapproved routes.

The presiding judge ruled that the accused person’s explanation did not amount to a valid defence, convicted her on the charges, and remanded her into lawful custody.

She is expected to return to court on June 29, 2026, for sentencing.
