Member of Parliament for Akwatia and legal practitioner, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has criticised comments made by the lawyer for the Kristo Asafo Church, Nana Kofi Kantanka, over the recent disturbances that marred the introduction of the church’s newly appointed leader.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam morning show, Mr Baidoo said he was particularly disappointed with the conduct and public comments of the church’s lawyer, urging him to exercise restraint.

“The person I’m not happy with in this whole issue is the lawyer. He is talking too much. That’s not how lawyers speak,” he stated.

According to him, Nana Kofi Kantanka’s role as counsel should require him to remain neutral and avoid appearing to side with one faction in the dispute.

“You are a family lawyer and Adwoa Safo is also part of the family. If you are the church lawyer, Adwoa is also part of the church. But if you feel like you are someone’s personal lawyer, then you should say so,” he said.

Mr Baidoo argued that the lawyer’s public commentary on the matter had become excessive and risked inflaming tensions.

“The talk has become too much. It is not by force to talk,” he added.

His comments come after Nana Kofi Kantanka alleged that former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo fired the first shot during an incident that disrupted the church event.

The lawyer had explained that the programme was organised to formally introduce the church’s newly selected leader to members of the General Council.

Addressing reports of gunfire, Nana Kofi Kantanka claimed that Adwoa Safo attempted to force her way through the church gates with her vehicle, prompting concern among private security personnel stationed at the premises.

However, Mr Baidoo questioned some of the explanations offered regarding the incident.

“To the extent that he was justifying that it was a warning shot, when you look at the position of the bullet, it doesn’t look like it,” he said.

The Akwatia MP also questioned why Adwoa Safo was allegedly prevented from entering the premises if the event was intended to be a church gathering.

“Why were they preventing Adwoa Safo from the premises? Wasn’t it a church event they were doing?” he asked.

He further raised concerns about security arrangements at the programme and the reported use of firearms.

“It was supposed to be a public event. Was the police notified? Were the private security personnel present there entitled to use guns at a church event?” he queried.

Mr Baidoo described the incident as unfortunate and called for calm as efforts continue to resolve the tensions surrounding leadership and funeral-related matters within the Kristo Asafo Church.
