The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has conducted a large-scale search and public education exercise at major bus terminals in Accra as part of efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse ahead of World Drug Day.
The exercise took place on June 18, led by NACOC’s Canine (K9) Unit in collaboration with the Education and Prevention Department and supported by the Tactical Deployment Unit
In a statement, NACOC explained that the operation started at 4:30 am at the STC main station in Accra, where officers conducted thorough checks on passengers, luggage, and vehicles before departure.
The exercise later extended to the STC Circle branch, the 2M Express Station, and finally the Neoplan Station.
Officers from the Education and Prevention Department engaged passengers in interactive discussions, providing travel safety tips and education on drug-related issues. Transport operators, including drivers and loaders, were also screened for drug use. Individuals who tested positive were offered counselling and guidance.
The exercise formed part of activities lined up to commemorate this year’s World Drug Day at the University of Professional Studies, Accra.
NACOC reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying enforcement, education, and prevention efforts across the country as part of a broader strategy to build a drug-free society.
