Five prime suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the lynching of a Captain of the Army at Denkyira Boase in the Central Region.

The five were part of about a hundred and eighty six (86) persons who were initially rounded up when reports emerged of the lynching of Captain Maxwell Mahama of the 5th Infantry Batallion (5BN) of the Ghana Army.

Central Regional Police Commander, DCOP Rev Ampah Beyin said on Adom FM’s Morning Show, ‘Dwaso Nsem’ Wednesday that the five arrested are believed to be prime suspects in the gruesome lynching of the Captain.

The five, he said include a man who struggled with the Captain and sought to take his pistol from him before his lynching.

The unnamed suspect sustained bullet wounds in his leg after the loaded pistol of the late Captain Mahama went off.

DCOP Ampah Beyin further called on all prime suspects linked to the case to report themselves to the Police as investigations continue.

He also indicated that the police are also on the lookout for the two ladies who were seen in pictures and videos that have gone viral setting fire to the lifeless body of the soldier.

The Police is also looking for one of the prime suspects in the murder who is also the Assemblyman for the town.

“It’s never true that the Assemblyman has been arrested as its circulating on social media…the man who was arrested is the one who was injured while struggling with the Captain…,” he said.

The officer, Captain Maxwell Mahama who was said to have gone for jogging on Monday morning was lynched by a mob after they allegedly mistook him for an armed robber because he was in possession of a weapon.

Pictures and videos of the brutal assault flooded social media and the actions of the residents have been condemned in no uncertain terms.

Many including President Akufo-Addo has condemned it and has promised the family of the deceased the perpetrators of this heinous crime would be brought to book.

Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul said the circumstance under which the officer lost his life “is weird” and hopes investigations will unravel the actual circumstances of his death.
