I have not banished anyone – Edina chief fumes

Nana Kodwo Condua VI, Paramount Chief of Edina

“Banishment in our traditional setting is archaic so why will I engage in that?”  The Paramount Chief of Edina in the Central region, Nana Kodwo Condua VI has said.

Media reports claimed that a 40-year-old woman, Margaret Akuvi Akoto had been banished by the Edina Traditional Council for refusing to pay a fine imposed on her.

Her only crime, the reports stated was failing to comply with a policy by the Fishmongers Association in Bantuma, a fishing community near Elmina not to sell smoked fish until a certain period.

The reports quoted the Komenda Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Municipal Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, Mr Richmond Mensah as their source.

Mr Mensah was said to be helping the victim get justice after the infringement of her fundamental human rights.

But, Nana Condua on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Thursday said the allegation against him is false.

He said the Edina Traditional Council, which he heads, never banished the fishmonger.

The Edina chief explained that, he only served as an arbiter between the Fishmongers Association and Ms Akoto to ensure she pays the fine but never banished her.

“I’m shocked. He (reporter) didn’t come for my side of the story and he has tarnished my image. I’m very very angry,” he fumed.
