President John Mahama has stressed that the newly launched Ghana National Research Fund must focus on delivering practical solutions to the country’s challenges rather than merely increasing academic research output.
According to the President, the fund is intended to support research that directly addresses national development needs, creates jobs, strengthens industries and improves the lives of Ghanaians.
Speaking at the official launch of the fund in Accra on Tuesday, June 16, President Mahama said research must go beyond theoretical inquiry and produce outcomes that have a meaningful impact on society.
“The objective is not only to produce more research. The objective is to produce research that solves problems, that informs policy, that creates jobs, that strengthens industries and improves the lives of Ghanaians. That is what the fund is about,” he stated.
He emphasized the need for research findings to influence policymaking and contribute to socio-economic transformation, adding that knowledge generation should be closely linked to the country’s development priorities.
To support the initiative, President Mahama announced the release of GH¢100 million as seed funding for the Ghana National Research Fund.
He noted that the investment forms part of government’s broader agenda to promote innovation, industrial growth and evidence-based policymaking through research and development.
The President expressed confidence that the fund would help bridge the gap between academia and industry while supporting researchers to develop solutions to some of Ghana’s most pressing challenges.
