The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has instructed Imams across Ghana, especially regional and district leaders, to offer special prayers for the Black Stars ahead of their opening match against Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A statement signed by the Executive Secretary of the Office of the National Chief Imam, Alhaji Osumanu Seidu, said the directive is part of efforts to invoke divine support for the national team as Ghana embarks on its fifth World Cup appearance.

According to the statement, Sheikh Sharubutu extended his goodwill, solidarity and prayers to the team, asking Allah to grant the players, technical staff and management guidance, strength, unity, discipline and resilience throughout the tournament.

It further noted that prayers are also being made for the team’s safety, protection from injuries, and the strength to represent Ghana with dignity and honour on the global stage.

The directive, it said, fulfils an earlier pledge made during a visit by officials of the Ghana Football Association to the National Chief Imam.

Special prayers will be offered not only for Ghana’s opening game against Panama but also for the team’s overall performance at the tournament.

The Chief Imam described the Black Stars as symbols of national pride and unity, stressing that their participation transcends political, ethnic and religious differences.

The statement also urged Ghanaians to rally behind the team through encouragement, goodwill and continuous prayers as they compete on football’s biggest stage.

Ghana will begin its Group L campaign against Panama on June 17, 2026, at BMO Field in Toronto, before facing England and Croatia in the remaining group matches.
