Maame Ama Hawa, a 71-year-old woman, has died after being trapped beneath a faulty excavator for more than an hour.

The excavator being used to demolish and clear an area for road construction in Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region, developed a fault and ran into the house trapping the 71-year-old woman’s body beneath it.

The deceased was allegedly preparing fufu for lunch at the time of the incident.

Explaining why the old lady had failed to move out of the house ahead of the exercise, a relative of the deceased said, the 71-year-old woman had pleaded with the Town Council to give her extra time to find a decent accommodation to move into but the authorities rejected her request and came unannounced to carry out the exercise.

Superintendent Fii Otchere of the Adansi Asokwa District Police Command, confirming the incident said all efforts to rescue the deceased proved futile.

“Because of the hilly nature of the area, the excavator developed a fault and reversed on its own, ran into the house and trapped the old lady beneath it,” he said.
